Sometimes, ideas come to me.
Sometimes they come in a flash, sometimes they come slowly — pencil line by pencil line, key tap by key tap, word by word.
The idea for this image came late in the evening, and I stayed up till nearly 11 perfecting it. Never have I paid more attention to the way light moves across an object. In the sea, on the woman’s hair; the shadows, the highlights, all of this suddenly came flowing from my fingers. As I worked, my vision for it became more clear, more perfect, more alive. And as I saw it clearer and clearer, so my hands could make it more and more real.
Don’t ever give up hope. I lost my vision for drawing for a long while. I couldn’t see what I wanted to create, and what I saw, my fingers wouldn’t recall to the papers before me. And then last night, something flipped inside me and I could see everything. I could see the picture perfectly clear, and as the pencil moved over the paper I saw more and more how to make the image in my mind come to grips with reality and take a physical form.
Don’t ever stop creating. Creating is everything.
