There are moments when I look at people and for a moment I see them with someone else’s eyes. Moments when I look at them and have to pause to catch my breath. When I see them almost like a stranger, when their features change and become novel and new all over again. Moments when I recognize friends as simply “human” and I see their soul through the clothes and hairstyles and skin, and I catch a glimpse in a way I imagine is similar to how God sees them. When I see their beauty and my throat gets tight.
They’re the smallest moments. A flash of a smile. A silence between us. A glance at them when they’re exhausted. A wave at a child. Seemingly insignificant moments that throw a spotlight on them and brilliantly illuminate them with a glow strong enough to make my heart stop.
There are moments when I see them and suddenly understand the concept of love at first sight. When I see them and suddenly my heart aches.
And then life goes on, but I have a deep feeling of a special privilege I was granted for just a brief moment. We are no mere mortals.
